Abstract

This article presents findings and interpretations from a research and development project in abachelor’s program in education. We ask to what extent new use of digital technology combinedwith traditional media, such as lectures and mandatory readings, offers processes of studying andlearning beyond what works. A Bildung-oriented didactical approach means to support students intheir work while they simultaneously are granted freedom to decide upon their ultimate goal forstudying. Analytically, we use a systems sociological optic to explore how Bildung is made possibleand constrained through inter-mediational conditions that address the relations between media andtheir connections with systems. Based on four group interviews and a survey, we examine how the students experienced the use of old and new technology and discuss how the combination of mediacontributed to academic education in terms of Bildung.
