Abstract

PUBLIC Law 94-168, the Metric Conversion Act of 1975, specifies that the transition to a metric system of measurements in the United States be a voluntary process rather than a conversion in a fixed period of time by government regulation. To assist voluntary conversion to the metric system of weights and measures, and in particular, to SI units (Systeme International d'Unites), a private, nonprofit organization, the American National Metric Council, was formed in 1973. It is supported by annual dues from its member organizations and from subscriptions to its journal, theMetric Reporter. The American Medical Association joined the National Metric Council in 1978 and initiated the formation of a biomedical sector committee to develop recommendations on the reporting of measurements in the field of clinical medicine. This section has been redesignated the Medicine and Health Coordinating Group and will receive recommendations from all the major specialty societies in medicine
