Kennedy Urges Further Pharmaceutical RegulationStarting from the position that (1) the pharmaceutical industry is by and large a model of rapacity, and (2) that most physicians know as much about pharmacology as their gas-station attendants know about petroleum chemistry, Senator Kennedy, chairman of the Health Subcommittee, has introduced a bill aimed at substantially altering the relation between the medical profession and the industry.Entitled the Drug Utilization and Improvement Act of 1974, the bill emanates from six months of investigations and hearings that showed large segments of the industry employing sales tactics that even peddlers of swampland cottage sites . . .
