Abstract

Travelling for medical reasons is one of the very early forms of and motivations for tourism. Travellers have been visiting famous healers, healing springs and other sites for thousands of years. Getting better, curing a certain indication or illness can be a very strong motivation. Medical tourism is closely related to other concepts and terminologies such as health tourism or wellness tourism. The umbrella term for medical and wellness tourism is health tourism. The definition for medical tourism advocated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization and European Travel Commission states that medical tourism is a type of tourism activity that involves the use of evidence-based medical healing resources and services (both invasive and non-invasive). This may include diagnosis, treatment, cure, prevention and rehabilitation.
