Abstract
The winter olympic games in Salt Lake City, UT, USA, promise to be an “olympian challenge” for some 1800 physicians and other health professionals selected from among more than 13000 who volunteered to safeguard the health of athletes, spectators, media, and olympic volunteers during Feb 8–25, and again, for the paralympic games in March (see p 457). “It's like a 2-to-3 week sprint for us”, says emergency physician and internist Scott Hansen, venue medical officer for Salt Lake Ice Center, where the figure skating and short track speed skating competitions are held.
