Abstract

A need exists for a Medical Spanish course designed specifically for Spanish majors, especially for those students that are following the pre-med sequence required for entrance to medical school. Often, Medical Spanish is not found in the undergraduate Spanish language curriculum. And generally students cannot acquire this kind of information from the more traditional course offerings in literature, linguistics, and culture. A cursory look at college level course catalogs verifies that many institutions do not offer a Medical Spanish course in their programs. Those that do offer one typically offer the course at a basic level where students possess little or no knowledge of Spanish. This restricts the course to only one group of students: non-majors.
