It have been shown that hyaluronic acid (HA) can restore aged skin fibroblasts at cellular proliferation and extracellular matrix synthesis (2). Chronic wound is very commonly seen in the government clinics in Malaysia. However, the available and current conventional treatment is not effective for all patients. This study is aimed to ascertain awareness and level of knowledge of medical practitioners on usage of HA in wound care. A cross sectional survey is done using questionnaires which are designed by research team. Inclusion criteria are medical practitioners working in Klang and speak English. The questionnaire had 47 questions in 5 section. Score ‘1’ was given to each correct answer and score ‘0’ was given for each wrong answer as well as the answer of “unsure”. Accordingly, the knowledge levels were recorded as follows: 16-24 points having good level of knowledge; 9-15 points having moderate level of knowledge, 0-8 points having poor level of knowledge. The ethics approval was obtained from UCSI ethics committee. A total of 100 respondents participated in this study (Table 1). About 51% respondents are not aware that HA can be used in wound care. No significant association between demographic factors and level of knowledge is observed (Table 2). A total of 84% doctors are willing to recommend patients to purchase hyaluronic acid over the counter for wound care .Our results showed that the level of knowledge about usage of HA as a new modality for wound care is low among medical practitioners in Malaysia. This result is in concordance with previous study which has shown conventional wound cares are still well accepted and standard among healthcare providers (3). In conclusion, moderate level of knowledge with a high level of perception on usage of HA for wound care was observed amongst the study participants.
