Abstract
There are three main aims in the treatment of endometriosis. Firstly, relief of painful symptoms such as dysmenorrhoea, pelvic pain and dyspareunia. The second aim is the relief of infertility, which for many patients is the only concern. Thirdly, women with no immediate plans regarding childbearing need to be safeguarded from possible progression of disease. The treatment recommended for each patient needs to be individualised according to age, disease stage and severity of symptoms. If the patient is already suffering from recurrent disease then the choice of treatment will depend on the response to therapies previously administered. A patient that finds the side-effects of one medication difficult to manage, may well benefit from receiving a medication that has a different mechanism of action and therefore different side-effect profile.
