Abstract
The medical records of 192 consecutive child psychiatric admissions were reviewed to determine the utility of routine laboratory tests in assessing inpatients. Among the 317 test batteries performed, only 1% of the tests produced abnormal results after age standardization and none resulted in treatment changes. These tests should be performed if indicated by abnormalities from review of systems or physical examination or to clarify a differential diagnosis.
