Abstract

The three types of physicians being educated in the People's Republic of China--practitioners in traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Mongolian medicine, and western-type medicine--and the nation's medical schools are discussed. The country officially recognizes 117 health professions educational institutions--23 colleges of traditional Chinese medicine, 91 western-type medical schools, two schools of pharmacy, and one institution that trains pharmacy, medical, and hygienic inspectors. Eight of the 91 western-type schools, in addition to providing training in western-type medicine, also offer education in traditional Chinese medicine. Training in Mongolian medicine is offered by one of these eight western schools and by one other western school. No schools offer only Mongolian medicine education.
