Abstract

Obesity is chronic disease with important health and psycho-social consequences. The medical complications affect almost every body system (Figure 1). Evidence for these risks comes from both cross-sectional surveys and large, prospective studies following cohorts of men and women over decades. Body mass index (BMI) is most commonly used to determine obesity in such epidemiological studies, though waist circumference (or waist:hip ratio) is increasingly important.
