Abstract

Background: During World War I, the city of Verdun suffered many destructive attacks, but the name Verdun remains infamous all over the world because of the battle in 1916 which lasted 300 days. During the battle 61,289 were killed, 216,337 wounded, and 101,151 persons went missing in the French Army. The commemoration of the centenary of the battle last year was an opportunity to analyze the organization of the first aid and casualty evacuations in the battlefield, and the medical network in the region of Verdun where about 60 million bombs fell down. New surgical and anesthetic methods were introduced near the battlefield and also mobile radiological units to look quickly for foreign bodies before surgery.
