Abstract

The topic of the beginning of human life was of rather minor concern to gynecologists as recently as thirty years ago. And the practice of abortion, at that time, was virtually off-limits to members of a profession guided by the Oath of Hippocrates. What developments have made it imperative now, in the 1990s, to discuss the biology of the beginning of human life and its ethical implications?
