Abstract

Discourse analysis is a methodological approach for analyzing qualitative data, whether written or spoken. Drawing on linguistics, discourse analysis examines grammar beyond the sentence, including the unwritten rules governing conversations and how language in use helps people get things done. Critical discourse analysis is a specialized method used for studying power and ideology and for motivating social change through critique. In medical anthropology, discourse analysis is used to study interactions between patients and medical practitioners, everyday talk about health, and technical medical language in clinical settings.
