Abstract

The present work analyzes the gastronomic culturemes of Latin America, specifically to see how the typical dishes are defined in Korean language. Unlike other research, we directed our interest towards mediation or intralinguistic translation. For that purpose, we drew upon some subtitles that appear in various videos such as documentaries, entertainment programs and interviews, etc. in which Latin American dishes are treated. We have consulted different videos published on YouTube, most of which are short video clips, the trend of Internet use nowadays. We got 29 gastronomic culturemes, which appeared 41 times. According to the result, for the mediation of these culturemes, the most used technique is the description of ingredients with 37 times of use, which consists of listing the ingredients used to prepare the dishes, followed by the description of preparation with 34 times and the social information with 20 times. We have been able to recognize the importance of cultural mediation in television programs to reflect the cultural aspects of a community, for which it is considered necessary to acquire both linguistic competence and cultural knowledge.
