Abstract

In 2005, the 6th of June was celebrated as a national holiday in Sweden for the first time. The previous year the parliament had decided to make it a holiday, so that the Swedes could celebrate it in a supposedly appropriate way. The 6th of June became the National day in 1983; before 1983 it was called the day of the Swedish flag. This day was instituted during World War I in 1916. Prior to that, the 6th of June had been celebrated as an unofficial national day since 1893 (see for example Swahn, 1997: 24).KeywordsNational IdentityMedia FormPublic EventNational MemoryInterwar PeriodThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
