Abstract

Objective To explore the mediating effect of self-efficacy on social and health-promoting lifestyle of elderly patients with chronic diseases in community. Methods By convenience sampling, 659 elderly patients with chronic diseases in a community in Minhang district of Shanghai were selected and General Information Questionnaire, General Self-efficacy Questionnaire, Social Support Scale and Health-promoting Lifestyle Scale were adopted in the questionnaire survey to investigate them. Results The self-efficacy scores of 659 elderly patients with chronic diseases were (27.598±4.907) , social scores were (38.810±5.938) and health-promoting lifestyle dimensional scores were (119.240±21.824) .The total score of Social Support Scale and objective support dimension were positively correlated with the total score of Self-efficacy Scale (r=0.461, 0.100; P<0.01) . The total score of Social Support Scale was positively correlated with Health-promoting Lifestyle Scale (r=0.082, P<0.05) , and the score of self-efficacy was positively correlated with Health-promoting Lifestyle Scale (r=0.180, P<0.01) . Self-efficacy partially mediated between social and health promotion (P<0.01) , and the mediating effect accounted for 28.3% of the total effect. Conclusions The social support, self-efficacy and health-promoting lifestyle of elderly patients with chronic diseases in community are at a medium or general level, and self-efficacy plays a part of mediating role between social and health promotion. Medical staff should pay attention to improving the social and self-efficacy of elderly patients with chronic diseases, so as to improve the level of health promotion lifestyle and the health condition of the elderly.
