Abstract

Pharyngeal and esophageal perforation caused by child abuse is rare [i-3]. All published reports have described cervical swelling, emphysema, and fever, and in two cases of a cervical abscess there was spread to the mediastinum. We report a case of child abuse in which the patient had inspiratory stridor from a mediastinal pseudocyst. Additional studies revealed evidence of prior pharyngeal perforation and widespread skeletal injury typical of child abuse.
