Abstract

Media has the ability to educate the public and influence how illnesses and diseases are perceived (1). When viewers are misinformed due to sensationalized storytelling that values entertainment over accuracy, they are unable to critically understand the nature of the disease (1). This makes it more likely that people will stigmatize individuals with illnesses, which can cause them to spread myths and misconceptions, leading to negative consequences such as blame, stereotyping, exclusion, rejection and discrimination against those living with the condition (2).
