Abstract

This article studies the issue of media literacy in the 21st century. It initially deals with the definitions of media literacy and such issues in this regards as media policy making and the effect of technology on development of media literacy in 21st century. The research also studies role of media literacy on the development of general knowledge of citizens and finally it considers the characteristics of media literate people. The results from the research showed that eight factors have a key role in the successful development and advancement of media literacy in schools including hiring initiative professionals to provide curriculums, making media literacy obligatory in schools, using media literacy professionals to train future teachers, training teachers to implement such programs of media literacy, hiring media literacy consultants in schools, developing NGOs and communities to support media literacy activities and holding workshops to train parents and families to engage in media literacy activities.
