Abstract

A knowledge based system concept is presented which enables the construction of decision support systems tailored for a specific application. This concept comprises three layers: a basic low level inference engine, a so-called subshell, and a knowledge base. The function of the subshell, which is presented in this paper, is to provide on the one hand a datamodel of representing (scientific) knowledge, and on the other hand a high level reasoning model. The significance of the subshell concept is to further separate reasoning algorithms from knowledge representation. As the structure for knowledge representation and the reasoning mechanisms are explicitly defined in this subshell, a very open and flexible system is created. A more complete description of the system is given elsewhere [10].
