Abstract

This monograph aims to present key compositional techniques and development of the compositional style of Marijan Lipovsek. The first part of the publication briefly outlines the composer’s life path, followed by a short representation of his poetics. Lipovsek was studying composition under Slavko Osterc and, compared to his colleagues, remained the most reserved regarding new stylistic currents. In his writings on music and the compositional process, Lipovsek highlights three key aspects that he developed during his creative endeavours. Firstly, a composer must follow his inner world and trust one’s inner inspiration. Secondly, every composition process must be justified – one should not simply implement a novelty only because it is new. Thirdly, the composition must be based on a solid compositional form and/or compositional method. Lipovsek’s inner world, however, was rooted in the classical music of Western culture. From this music, he drew his inspiration; his powerful attachment to it prevented him from negating its code or completely breaking ties with this tradition.
