Abstract

An attempt has been made to identify the role and contribution of the three degradative processes. iz. thermal, me chanical, and thermo-oxidative, that arc active during texturization of nylon 6 multifilament yarn. It was found that the mechanical degradation takes place predominantly, whereas thermal degradation occurs to a less extent. The thermo-oxidative degradation contributes little to the overall degradative processes The major effects of these processes lead to a change in average size and size distribution of the parent polymer, which, in turn, cause a reduction in the mechanical properties of the yarn. Infrared and ultraviolet spectra do not indicate any change in the original chemical composition of the polymer.
