Abstract

The mechanism of the electrosynthesis of sulfones based on the reduction of sulfur dioxide in aprotic solvents in the presence of organic halides has been studied in detail. The sequence of reactions postulated earlier (J. Appl. Electrochem., 3 (1973) 291) SO 2 + e − → SO ∓− 2 SO ∓− 2 + RX → R-SO ∓ 2 + X − R-SO ∓ 2 + SO − 2 → R-SO − 2 + SO 2 R-SO − 2 + RX → R-SO 2 - R + X − has been confirmed by evaluating kinetic and other data making use of electrochemical, spectrophotometric and ESR technigues. The second and fourth steps are S N2 substitution reactions, while the third step is a homogeneous electron transfer reaction.
