Abstract
Purpose: We have previously shown that cotransplantation of a kidney and heart into a class I disparate recipient treated with 12 days of cyclosporine (CyA) induced tolerance to both organs and prevented chronic rejection. In contrast, isolated heart transplantation resulted in cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) and rejection by POD 55. This study investigated the mechanisms whereby kidney cotransplantation induced tolerance in this pre-clinical, large animal model.
