Abstract

The mechanisms of grain refinement to submicron scale during warm “abc” deformation were studied in commercial pure titanium and two-phase Ti-64 titanium alloy. Large strains were obtained via successive compression of sample along three orthogonal directions. Grain refinement in titanium occurred due to grain subdivision mechanism because of formation of deformation induced high angle boundaries created by slip and twinning that led to strengthening. The steady state flow, which was observed at the last stages of deformation, was due to accommodation of microstructure arisen from the change in the strain path. In two-phase alloy during straining the initial lamellar structure transformed into the submicron globular one. Unlike titanium, there occurred flow stress softening and superplasticity was observed.
