Abstract

Soot formed during the combustion of polymers is actually produced from the gas phase resulting from thermal decomposition of the polymer. The mechanisms of soot formation from gases are described. The description includes (i) the formation of soot precursors and soot particle inception, (ii) the aggregation of particles, (iii) the surface growth and (iv) the post-oxidation of soot.
