Abstract

Possible mechanisms for the enhancing action of a magnetic field on the relative intensity of spectrum lines from higher ionization stages are suggested for the interrupted vacuum arc and for the open arc. The susceptibility to this phenomenon exhibited by rare earth elements is interpreted in terms of the presence of low-lying energy levels.
