Abstract

In Euphorbia trigona HAW. the succulent stem shows an obligate Crassulacean Acid Metabolism(CAM), while the leaves fix CO 2 photosynthetically according to the C 3- type. The ratio dark-C0 2 -fixationjlight-C0 2 -fixation in the stem is influenced by the environmental conditions. Since leaves are removed during longer dry periods, this diversity in CO 2 -fixation of the different organs ins ecologically advantageous. The succulent Apocynaceae Pachypodium brevicaule, P. horombense and P. lamerei with a similar habitus like Euphorbia trigona fix CO 2 photosynthetically according to the C 3 -type both in leaves and stems.
