Abstract
A mechanism is described for the formation of whiskers on a crystal which is growing by vapor deposition. A necessary condition is the existence of diffusion-limited transfer of material or heat. The mechanism is supported by Brenner's observations that metal whiskers formed by vapor-phase reduction invariably grow from previously deposited material.
