Abstract

The laser photolysis technique has been used for the investigation of temperature and solven effects on the triplet decay rate ( k T) of thiacarbocyanine dyes containing I and Br at the meso position of the polymethine chain. At low temperatures, when K T is virtually constant, the radiationless triplet—singlet transition occurs via Siebrand's mechanism. As the temperature is increased, the heat-activated transition over the potential barrier separating the triplet and the ground state becomes the basic triplet decay mechanism.
