Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results demonstrate the strictly local progress of the K-induced reconstruction of Cu(110). Dispersed, small nuclei of the reconstructed phase, involving a single K adatom, are formed on flat terraces (“homogeneous nucleation”). The interplay between attractive interface energy and repulsive dipole-dipole interactions leads to anisotropic growth along [11̄0] at higher coverages.
