Abstract

In the formation of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by laser ablation and arc discharge, metal catalysts are necessary. We found that NiCo was the most effective in catalyzing SWNT formation and that other metals followed the order NiCo>Ni∼NiFe≫Co∼Fe. We confirmed that all these metals were effective catalysts of graphitization, indicating their equal potential-ability for catalyzing SWNT formation. The reason Co and Fe could not well catalyze SWNT formation in laser ablation and arc discharge is discussed based on the segregation manner of graphite on Co and Fe.
