Abstract

SAPK/JNK and Akt, galectin-1 phosphorylated only ERKI/2 at 120 min after addition to HSC culture. This was accompanied by the phosphorylation of Raf-1 and MEK1/2. DNA synthesis of HSC and phosphorylation of ERKI/2 by galectin-1 was inhibited by either PD98059 or U0126, but not by SB203580 and LY294002. Although CD45 and CD43 were reported to be counter receptors for galectin-1, they were expressed in neither quiescent nor activated HSC. Conclusion: Galectin-1 was induced in activated HSC and fibrotic liver tissues and may regulate HSC proliferation via Raf-1/MEKI/2/ERK1/2 pathway. Induction of galectin-1 seems to play a role in the development of liver fibrosis.
