The mechanism of fast ionic diffusion in solids is discussed in terms of isolated defects and domains for stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric compounds such as silver iodide and sodium β-alumina. The structural criteria for finding fast motion and some recent data on tunnel and layer materials are described.
