Abstract
Protein COP1 (COnstitutive Photomorphogenesis 1) is a key regulator of plant photomorphogenesis. In darkness, COP1 affects expression of more than 20% of Arabidopsis thaliana genes; primarily, this is associated with the involvement of COP1 in proteolysis of light-controlled transcription factors; COP1 suppresses expression of photomorphogenesis genes. Some specific features of regulation permit COP1 to control different stages of plant development. COP1 manifests activity of E3 ubiquitin ligase, and simultaneously it is involved in the regulation of UV-B-responsive gene transcription. This review analyzes modern notions about the mechanisms of COP1 action.
