Mechanism for the formation of shear bands with (hhl) orientation of boundaries in single crystals with an FCC lattice

Abstract

We propose a model for the formation of a macroscopic shear band with invariant planar boundaries of the (hhl) type, whereh/l is a rational number, associated with two slip systems along the (111) and (111) planes. We introduce the concepts of stress mesoconcentrator for the excess dislocation charge localized within the volume of a cylinder of diameterD≈0.1 μm and shear carriers along the (hhl) planes of the superdislocation type. We discuss a number of consequences of the proposed model.
