Abstract

The theory of micromorphic continua, developed by Eringen and his co-workers, is recapitulated and extended. Master equations are obtained in the form of integral operators from which all order volume and surface statistical moments are derivable leading to a hierarchy of balance laws. Micropolar and indeterminate couple stress theories are summarized as special cases. The relation to other recent microstructure theories is discussed briefly.
