Abstract

The application of internal friction to Al and Al-alloy films on Si substrates is reviewed. The observed grain boundary relaxation peak can be used to characterize the material with respect to electromigration resistance, to influences of small additions of impurities on the grain boundary diffusion, and to the adhesion strength between film and substrate. The contributions which have to be considered in a quantitative description of the grain boundary relaxation are discussed.
