Abstract

A fine and stable grain size in steel results in greatly improved mechanical properties. In analogy to the addition of larger quantities of carbon to form ultra‐high carbon steels, the formation of borides in steel through rapid solidification and powder metallurgical techniques leads to the required grain size (see Figure) The materials processing, microstructure control, and properties of the materials are reviewed. magnified image
