Abstract

This paper describes an experimental program that was undertaken to evaluate the mechanical properties of plain autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) produced by different manufacturers. The mechanical properties for three grades of AAC produced by Hebel, Ytong, and Contec were investigated. Specifically, the compressive strength, flexural tensile strength, shear strength, and modulus of elasticity were determined. Test methods for flexural strength, shear strength, and modulus of elasticity were developed as part of this study and are being used for the development of new American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)test standards for AAC. The paper recommends revision of the specified AAC strength values in ASTM C1386-98 to better reflect the material produced in the United States. The test results indicate that the variation in the material properties with respect to the direction of rise indicated that further testing may be needed for both the perpendicular and parallel directions.
