Abstract

The microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated of nano-sized iron obtained by the two methods of severe plastic deformation (e > 10): high pressure torsion (HPT) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). The grain size after deformation was found to be 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the initial grain size and was below 200 nm. A significant increase in tensile strength, yield stress, micro- and nano-hardness was also observed. It has also been found that the materials processed via HPT and ECAP have different mechanical properties. This indicates that the deformation path affects the properties of SPD nano-metals.
