Abstract

Recycled materials in form of chips can be processed into high-performance alloys via Bulk Mechanical Alloying (BMA) followed by heating and forging. The produced alloy contains refined microstructure, redistribution and homogenization of constituent phases. AZ91 and Al-12%Si alloys were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of this process. In AZ91, interconnected Mg17Al12 phases were destructed and redistributed into the matrix. Si particles in Al-12%Si alloy were refined to a few micron range. Refmement of microstructure with plastic deformation induced during BMA helps producing alloys with superior mechanical properties compared to those of cast materials. Tensile strength up to 431 and 255 is possible for Al-12%Si and AZ91 alloys respectively.
