Abstract

This work focuses on improvement of performance and effectiveness on welding 5 mm thick plate with different filler metal and its post effects on the properties. The comparison of different filler rod butt joints of 5 mm thick 5083-F Aluminium alloy using Tungsten inert gas welding was analyzed. Two different types of weld filler metal were selected, ER5356 (Al-Mg) and ER4043 (Al-Si), to understand the character of microstructure and weld by studying the effect of alloying element. Mechanical properties were measured using Vickers micro hardness test and tensile test. The Optical microstructure (OM) and Scanning Electron Microstructure (SEM) studies were performed for metallurgical observations. The failure location of all weld samples was in FZ and exhibit brittle fracture. The morphology of the weld area reveals the existence of porosity in various sizes. The fractography images of tensile failed samples also proved the presence of porosity in Fusion Zone (FZ). The microstructure studies observed clear variation in weld location. The formation of particles was observed to be different in weld fusion zone at various locations due to change in filler metal composition.
