Abstract

In the past several years, many advancements have been made in concrete technology. Sustainable use of supplementary materials and revolutionary developments in superplasticizing admixtures has facilitated improvements in the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is an innovative high performance concrete developed using these supplementary materials and high range water reducing admixtures (HRWRA) that has compressive strength greater than 140 MPa. UHPC can be used to carry loads with smaller sections and to reduce the number of structural elements, while also providing greater energy absorption during seismic events and excellent durability characteristics. This paper discusses the fundamental principles to follow to develop UHPC and reviews the body of research that has developed the improved mechanical properties and durability characteristics of UHPC.
