Abstract

A new theoretical model to predict thrust and torque in high speed drilling is presented. The method consists of determining the continuous distributions of thrust and torque along the lip and the chisel edge of a twist drill. The calculation uses the oblique cutting model for the lip and the orthogonal cutting model for the chisel edge. Thrust and torque are obtained in terms of the geometric features of the drill, the cutting conditions and the properties of the machined material.
