Abstract

Field trials were conducted to determine the suitability of using conventional combines for commercial harvesting of lesquerella. Controlled trials for evaluating the effect of operating variables on performance were made along with representative commercial harvesting operations. The performance of the combines was considered acceptable, provided they were properly equipped and adjusted. Seed losses averaged less than 5%. Windrowing of lesquerella was found to be feasible, although additional trials should be conducted to evaluate overall suitability of this process. Commercial cleaning of the seed was found to be variable and poor, with recovered amounts ranging from a low of 5% to a high of 66%. These results indicate that alternative cleaning techniques should be investigated.
