Abstract

The author emphasises that epidemiological evidence, which has been largely responsible for arousing interest in the possibly causative relation ships between fibre-depleted diets and certain characteristically Western diseases, alone never incriminates a low intake of fibre as a cause of disease. It may be better to consider fibre-rich foods as protective rather than to view a lack of fibre as causative. The evidence now available indicates that fibre-rich diets may be protective against ailments as common in Western countries as appendicitis, hiatus hernia, haemorrhoids and varicose veins.
