Abstract

PIGMI (Pion Generator for Medical Irradiation) is a compact linear proton accelerator whose prototype is being designed and built at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. PIGMI consists of a 250-keV injector, a double harmonic buncher, a tape-wound 13-kG solenoid magnet, and four accelerator tanks with a total of 63 drift tubes of which 18 will contain strong focusing quadrupoles of permanent magnets. Small component sizes (for example, one drift tube is only 0.690-cm long) necessitates innovative design approaches. Fabrication and assembly are in progress, and some of the mechanical aspects of some of the accelerator components are described in this paper.
