Abstract

For partially stabilized ZrO2 crystals (PSZC) with terbium oxide and cerium oxide additive, we have studied the indentation fracture toughness characteristics when indentations are made by a Vickers and Knoop pyramidal indenter. We compare the behavior of PSZC when subjected to indentation with analogous properties of cubic ZrO2 crystals (FSZC) and ZrO2-based ceramic. For PSZC, on the (100) plane we establish an interconnection between the anisotropy of lateral cracks and the anisotropy of the elasticity modulus. We determine the parameters of the equation for calculation of the stress intensity factor (KcV) for PSZC when indentations are made by a Vickers pyramidal indenter.
